Located only a short distance away from Maui, Lana’i is a beautiful island that many guests do not even think to consider visiting when coming to Maui for vacation. While some guests prefer more structured and inclusive tours, other guests prefer to explore the island on their own. There are several great ways to explore the beautiful island of Lana’i by land, sea, air, and underwater and we wanted to share some of our favorite options with you:
At this time, Lana’i does not offer extensive transportation from Manele Bay (harbor) up to the city or the other regions of the island. At times, it can be a challenge to get around since there is not much offered here and public transportation is not an option. One of the most popular ways to visit the island is by taking a day trip via sailing catamaran. There are two primary trips that guests can consider taking:
This trip is less structured yet will still allow guests some time to go check out the island of Lana’i. Upon arrival to Lana’i, the captain will stop off at a snorkeling spot for guests to check out before heading into the Harbor to be dropped off for a while to explore. Upon arrival to the harbor, guests will be on their own to walk over to Hulopo’e Beach (a marine preserve) where they can go snorkeling, hiking, or relax on the beach and swim. A picnic lunch is provided so guests can find a quiet spot to enjoy the views from. Upon the return home, the captain will often stop and do a mid-ocean swim in the channel too! This trip is great for guests who love to sail as on the way there and back, if the conditions allow, guests will certainly experience an amazing sailing crew. Family Owned & Operated Tour
This trip is more structured and more inclusive of activities and food & beverage. Upon arrival to Manele Bay on Lana’i, guests will be guided down to the beach where they can swim, snorkel, SNUBA dive, or hike. They also offer the option to take a van tour up to Lana’i City (about 20 minutes away) to see what life is like to live on Lana’i. The guide is a local driver who is happy to chat with guests and talk about the some of the history of the island and some of the recent changes that have come to Lana’i as well. At the end of the trip, guests will enjoy a private chef dinner prepared by the Captain before heading back to Maui. You can learn more about this trip or request a booking online here.
Jeeps are a perfect vehicle to explore the island of Lana’i with. The island has a vast range of climates and regions to explore and regardless if you with to explore the Garden of the Gods, Shipwreck Beach, or check out Lana’i City, it is all possible with this trip. Guests are on their own to explore so they are on their own time and can stay for longer periods of time or visit for shorter periods of time, pending their needs. Guests will be required to either take the ferry or airplane from Maui to Lana’i and upon arrival an agent will pick you up to take you to your Jeep rental up in Lana’i City. After you check out, you are on your own to explore and visit using a custom map they provide to you. Rentals will include the Jeep portion of the tour only so guests will need to purchase separate tickets to get to Lana’i accordingly. You can check out more details about this self-guided adventure and request to book online here.
The island offers some incredible places to visit and seeing the island from above is one of the best ways to see the island. From the famous Shipwreck Beach to Sweetheart Rock, the island offers breathtaking scenery and is unlike any other experience you will have when visiting there. This tour is a fairly new tour that started and guests can select from either doing a shorter tour or a longer tour pending their interests. The shorter tour will be about 30 minutes and will only include the island of Lana’i while the longer tour is about 2.5 hours long and will include all of Maui County (Maui, Lana’i, and Moloka’i), making it a 3 island tour. Our recommendation really comes down to what you would like to experience and budget. This experience is great for PADI Certified Divers! Guests will have the ability to explore underwater marine life, cathedrals, lava tubes, and reefs in a remote area of the island. Though there are other companies that visit Lana’i to scuba dive, it certainly is less crowded of an experience compared to other popular dive sites here on Maui. Departing from the Lahaina Harbor in West Maui, guests will arrive at their scuba destination in about 40 minutes or less pending the conditions and will have an awesome captain and crew to assist them with their experience. Included in the trip is your basic gear (fins, mask, snorkel, tank, weights) and they do have the option to rent gear such as a wet suit, BC regulator, and dive computers too for an additional fee. The boat will accommodate 11 total divers with 1 seat available for non-certified divers to snorkel while the others dive. Your tour will have you back to Maui by mid-day (around 12pm) so you still have the rest of the day to relax and enjoy the island of Maui.
