Growing up I always remember watching the sunset and each time I saw it, it brought a sense of joy and happiness to me. Knowing that each day the sunset would be different it caused me to go down to the water as often as I could to watch the colors in the sky lite up as the sun goes down. One of my favorite things to do on Maui is to watch the sunset while out on an evening walk. Guests always ask “where is the best place to watch the sunset on Maui?” and my reply can often be long winded as there are so many great places to watch the sunset. One of my favorite places to watch the sunset is from the slopes of Haleakala.
Soaring more than 10,000ft above sea level, Haleakala is one of Maui’s biggest attractions. The volcano is a very special place as it is known by locals as “house of the rising sun” and has significant deep rooted culture around it. At times the weather can play a big factor on watching the sunset at the summit mostly due to the weather changing quickly. At times from the valley (looking up) it appears that it will be cloudy at the summit, but the summit will be perfectly clear. Don’t forget your jacket as there are commonly wind gusts and chilly temperatures at the summit.
Another popular place to watch the sunset is along the beach (of course!). Usually about an hour before the sunset guests will start to head to the beach to find a relaxing spot to enjoy the sun sink in to the Pacific Ocean. During the spring, the sun will usually sink behind the neighboring island of Lana’i, though that does not mean there will not be a spectacular sunset! Many guests enjoy going for a nice walk along the beach as well during the evening as it is both relaxing, yet romantic at the same time.
I always enjoy an adventure and exploring the island of Maui no matter what time of day it is. There are so many places on Maui to enjoy a relaxing sunset and at times you just need to get out there and see where you end up. One place I enjoy ending up is along the King’s Trail in South Maui. Typically there are not that many guests crowding the gravel beaches and it allows you to appreciate the surrounding a little more here. This location has stunning views of the Molokini Crater and Kaho’olawe. At times you can see the summits of the Big Island of Hawai’i and outline of Moloka’i off in the distance.
