Traveling with your family (or as we say here in Hawai’i, your ‘ohana) can be a challenge. From packing all of the kids stuff to managing them during travel process, you arrive to the island ready to start your vacation with your ‘ohana and the keiki (children). Maui offers guests many great offerings to families to experience and we wanted share some of our favorite family activities.
Aquarium – Many parents are relieved to hear that Maui has an amazing aquarium. The Maui Ocean Center is located in Central Maui directly at the Ma’alaea Harbor and is a perfect addition to your family vacation! Guests will see a variety of marine life that is found around the Hawaiian Island. The Maui Ocean Center features tide pools and other viewing exhibits that are both indoors and outdoors. Additionally there are marine specialists that discuss the exhibits to guests on a regular schedule, making you experience both educational and informative!
Guests will see turtles, fish, corals, and other sea creatures found around the islands. You cant miss the largest aquarium in the state either as it contains a variety of large fish including sharks!
Gecko Catching – Have you seen a gecko before? They are commonly found on Maui in just about all of the warmer claimants towns. Kids and adults alike enjoy seeing the geckos as not only are they really cute, they also eat the bugs!
Typically, geckos are hanging out around the various plants that can most likely be found around your accommodation. Guests enjoy searching for these little creatures during the daytime hours but you have to move quick as geckos are quicker than you would think!
Small nets can be purchased at most any major retail store but your accommodation may even have them in the common area storage available to you and your ‘ohana already!
Maui Fridays – Each Friday on Maui a different town hosts a street like festival that is a perfect way to experience the local culture. There is often live music, vendors, shopping, and of course, food! There is commonly a “keiki zone” with various activities for keiki to enjoy.
Entry is complimentary and the events are held in public areas making it convenient to park and explore the town. “Maui Fridays” as it is call, is a perfect way to interact with the local culture and even have opportunities to support many of the local vendors. Currently the schedule for these events are First Friday – Wailuku Town, Second Friday – Lahaina Town, Third Friday – Makawao, and Fourth Fridays – Kihei
Cultural Services – Another great way to spend time with your ‘ohana while on Maui is by making arrangements for a cultural services. Keiki and adults alike love to learn how to string their own lei and dance hula. Maui has many family fun cultural activities that are a perfect way to get together with the family. Other popular cultural services include: Hawaiian Language Lessons, Ukulele Lessons, Story Telling, and Cultural Island Tours and Hikes.
We are happy to assist you in making these arrangements and have any of these services directly at your accommodation or we can help find a nice location that works best for your and your ‘ohana.
Snorkeling – One of the most common activities that guest inquire about is snorkeling. This activity is great for the entire ‘ohana as keiki love to be in the water. We like to suggest snorkeling from a tour operator as they have extensive knowledge of the snorkeling locations and they provide all the needed gear (including various flotation devices too!). Guests will certainly be able to see a variety of marine life including fish, corals, and turtles! Some of the boats even feature water slides for the kids (and yes… adults you can go down it too!). Most boats do include a BBQ Lunch as well.
Lahaina’s Front Street – Located in West Maui, Lahaina’s Front Street offers a lot of things to see and do for the whole ‘ohana. Front Street is perhaps one of the most well known areas in Lahaina as it is centrally located not only directly across from the water, but also because of the attractions found here.
Front Street has great places to visit including the Banyan Tree found in the heart of Front Street. There are shops, restaurants, and plenty of opportunities for entertainment along the way you as just never know who will be there sharing their talents along the way.
The Lahaina Harbor is also located here where it is common to see the locals catching some waves if there is any surf. Also located here is the outlet mall that is conveniently located just across from the waters edge.
Ziplines – A perfect activity for those families that have an appetite for adventure. There are many zipline companies on the island that have that offer views during their tours.
Many guests find that the first zip they do is the scariest one and once they do one, they want to keep going! Guests will experience zipping over various terrains from gulches and ravines to grassy plains pending on the location you wish to experience.
This tour does have a limitation with age and weight restrictions to ensure that all guests are able to zip over the entire line accordingly. Typically the age for most companies is age 8 and older to enjoy this experience.
