Thing to do in the Paia area

by Matt Morris – Owner & Lead Concierge

Paia Town
Located along Maui’s northern shoreline, this unique little town is quite bustling with activities and things to do. There are many small shops and restaurants in the area and the town is mostly known as the “starting” point of the Road to Hāna. Known for its hippy, bohemian, surfer-like atmosphere, this town is really fun to stay at or visit during your stay. Paia Town has a different vibe from the rest of the island and I find that most guests who stay in this area are looking for a little more low key time on Maui, yet still can be close by to other sites, attractions, and activities. For those just passing though, it’s still a really fun place to walk around in the late evening or just after lunch for a stroll.

Things to do in Paia Town

Check out Paia Fish Market on your visit Paia Town.

There are many small restaurants to check out pending our interests though some of our favorite places to enjoy a quick casual meal include: Paia Fish Market, Flat Bread Pizza, and Cafe Mambo. The town can become quite busy around the peak meal times and parking can be a little slow to come by so you may wish to plan ahead of time before you get too hungry. If you are staying in the area, you can venture up to Haliimaile General Store as well which is located only a short drive away from Town.

Due to the location of the Town along the wind facing portion of the island, there are several opportunities for water sports here. Located just a short drive away from the famous Kite Beach, there are opportunities for guests to learn or refine their skills for either Kite Surfing or Wind Surfing. Advanced lessons are also offered and we are happy to help you with those if you are a more advanced skill surfer. There are not any boat charters that depart from this side of the island as activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving, and other sailing trips will depart about 20 minutes away in Ma’alaea. We are happy to further helping you find the right options for any of these or other options and getting started is easy! Contact us today to learn more!

Visit Ho’okipa to see waves and watch the surfers in action

Just beyond Paia Town, the Ho’okipa State Park is known for world class surfing waves, windsurfers, and kiteboarding. From time to time, you can even see the sea turtles come up onto the beach here as well. Baldwin Beach is another really pretty beach to enjoy which is located just before you get into the actual town of Paia. There is usually a fairly consistent wind found in this section of the island so at times beach going can be a little challenging pending on the winds. Maui’s dormant volcano, Haleakala, is also located on the same side of the island as well and the highways are fairly easy to access to get to the National Park.

Other Unique Things

Paia is a really fun place to visit and stay. The general atmosphere consists of health conscience living and there are many various things to check out here including yoga studios, pilates classes, and health food stores such as Mana Foods to check out. Many guests who enjoy cycling also visit this area as there are great road biking areas and mountain biking available in the local area to Paia Town.

Road to Hāna

Things to do in Paia

Visit Paia just before departing on your trip on the Road to Hana

Though the Road to Hana goes well beyond Paia Town, it is really the “start” of the journey and you will need to go through this town to continue on the road. There is a gas station along with convenience stores available there for any last minute needs. Past Paia Town, the next gas station would be located in Hana Town so you may wish to fill up prior to making your journey. If you need a little extra boost, Honolulu Coffee Company is conveniently located on the right-hand side (passing through Paia Town towards Hana). Though many guests enjoy making the drive on their own, there are several tour companies that we recommend – please contact us for more questions about shared or private charters.

I hope that this information is helpful to you during your stay.
